Spring is the season of new beginnings, growth and colour. It’s the perfect time to inspire curiosity, creativity and get in some outdoor exploration! Here’s a few suggestions to make spring at your service fun, educational and full of seasonal magic.
Garden Exploration
It all starts with a step outdoors! Discuss plants, insects & seasonal changes- is it warm? Is it rainy? Can you spot any insects? What can you hear? Bees buzzing? What can you smell? Flowers? Invite children to discuss & record their findings via drawing/writing/collage in their own ‘nature journal’. This activity can be repeated over a few weeks, note the changes & differences each time!
See below for a Nature Journal free download, which you can print and staple for children to use while they explore their local surroundings.
Blossom Paintings
Materials: Paint, pompoms, paper. Optional: add real leaves for a bit of nature fun. Use tweezers to pick up pompoms, then dab in paint to create flowers! This activity is amazing for developing fine motor skills and encourages colour experimentation & exploration Sensory Play with Spring Themes Set up sensory bins with coloured rice, flowers or your favourite sensory base. Add toy insects, flowers or small animals for tactile and imaginative play.
Nature Collages
Materials: Leaves, petals, twigs, glue, paper/cardboard. Take children on a nature walk to collect natural items, then let them free with glue! Watch the magic unfold as they create amazing collages. Great for sensory play and connecting with the outdoors.
Butterfly Sun Catchers
Materials: Transparent contact paper, tissue paper, scissors. Arrange tissue paper on contact paper and cut to make vibrant butterfly wings! Extend this activity by adding straps for children to wear their creations.
Bug Hunt
Organise a safe bug hunt by placing plastic or wooden insects around the room or outdoor space. Children can observe insects, learn their names and discuss their findings.
Spring Music & Movement
Sing seasonal songs or create movement games inspired by spring, i.e. flutter like butterflies, grow like flowers or buzz like bees!
